Albert C. Hine
Associate Dean and Professor
College of Marine Science
"Giving is personal; it is about what resonates with the person, which then causes them to give. I give to the William Sackett Fund because that fund speaks to me, I knew the fellow, he meant a lot to me, he was a great mentor, and I'll always remember that."
"It was once said that "All politics are local", well giving is local too." Al Hine's philosophy on giving has translated into the way that he promotes the Faculty & Staff Campaign within the College of Marine Science.
As the College's area representative for the Faculty & Staff Campaign, Al Hine illustrates to employees how their financial support will make a difference in their lives or in the lives of the people that they know. "The impact of giving to endowments and fellowships has been important to the College of Marine Science; and we have used the recipients of those endowments as an example; as a reason to give." He tries to convey to his colleagues the importance of the endowments and the fellowships, and their ultimate impact on USF and the community, "We have been able to attract students here that we couldn't attract, and they have gone out and they have represented us well in the outside community and they contribute to the overall scientific oceanographic enterprise in the United States."
For Al, he believes that giving is also very personal, that it is about what resonates with the person, which then causes them to give, and that is most certainly the case for Al. Al gives to a fund named in honor of one of his early mentors, William Sackett, "That fund speaks to me because I knew the fellow and I know the family...he meant a lot to me, he was a great mentor, and I'll always remember that."
