"We have an opportunity to give, to an area, a college, something that interests us...and that helps ...that helps those students, and when you look at the big picture of the University, I think that that's a very good thing to do."
Debbie Lum was born and raised in Tampa, and graduated with her B.A. in Mass Communications, sequence in Public Relations from USF. After working at Busch Gardens, and in the banking sector of corporate America, Debbie returned to her Alma Mater, where she has remained for the past sixteen years making a positive impact both through her professional endeavors and in her personal giving to USF.
Debbie believes that even though she is an employee of the University, her personal giving can benefit USF, "... it's not just about the money that the state gives...sometimes there needs to be other funding for the things that are around us, and that is the Faculty & Staff Campaign, and your personal giving can help."
"My giving has its roots in Athletics. Athletics does have a 'rewards system' if you will, some priority seating that you can get. Back when I first started giving that was my initial reason and motivation to continue giving. I think that the rewards system that they have in place, challenged me to give more, so that I could get those priority seats." She feels that in giving to Athletics you get the motivation of knowing that you are supporting the students, and helping to put a good product on the field for USF.
Debbie also gives to other areas of the University when she sees a program or initiative that interests her, she feels a need to contribute, and would encourage others to do the same, "We have an opportunity to give, to an area, a college, something that interests us...and that helps ...that helps those students, and when you look at the big picture of the University, I think that that's a very good thing to do."
