Department Head for Maintenance
"By donating I am helping my co-workers to achieve their lifetime goals...helping our Physical Plant employees to get an education and better themselves "
"As soon as I came into USF, I absolutely loved the people, and I loved the environment, and knew it was a place I wanted to make my career." Hollie Chancey started working at USF in December of 1991, and has remained with USF ever since. As the Department Head for Maintenance, a 'good day' means only one emergency...on a 'bad day', she says it could be any number of things, from leaky ceilings, to flooded bathrooms, electrical outages, or broken tiles. And although it is not true, Hollie teases her staff by saying, "People don't know we exist until there is a problem." However, the Maintenance employees do more than problem solve and trouble shoot, they are also involved in the types of projects Hollie calls 'wins'those projects that make the customers happy; painting offices and making the campuses look really good. Her encouragement helps motivate, "I like to tell my staff that our compliments are when the customer is not complaining, that means they are happy."
For Hollie, the Faculty & Staff Campaign for the University of South Florida is the opportunity for her to give to the Physical Plant Scholarship; a scholarship that she herself received, and is a unique symbol of the department's care for their fellow employees. Shortly after Hollie earned her Associates Degree she started working on her bachelor?s degree at USF so that she could obtain that higher education and move into management. At the time she decided to start work on her degree, the Physical Plant Department was starting a scholarship fund for their own employees. In this way, the department was able to give back to their own employees. "I was working for Physical Plant, and they knew that I was actively seeking a degree, and at that time they were developing their own Physical Plant Scholarship, and they used me as their 'test' to get a lot of the bugs worked out." Hollie received the Physical Plant Scholarship and successfully completed her un aduate work, and moved up into management within the organization just as she had been determined to do.
The opportunity that the scholarship provided Hollie with and her commitment to her fellow employees are her two main reasons for giving back to the Physical Plant Scholarship Fund. "I believe it is a cycle. They helped me, and I want to help back." She believes wholeheartedly in the scholarship opportunity, "I think it is a wonderful program. When I interview and hire people I let them know that Physical Plant has their own unique scholarship to put our own co-workers through the system to get an education. Anything that we can do to help our Physical Plant employees to get an education and better themselves is what I like to promote...by donating I am helping my co-workers to achieve their lifetime goals."
